October is almost over, which means it’s nearly time to say goodbye to our annual horror series, 31 Days of Halloween. As we round up this year’s posts, here’s a quick look at some horror-related writings around the web.
I’m a jaded old horror fan, so coming across something that genuinely scares me is a rarity. “Screwfly Solution” by James Triptree, Jr. (née Alice Sheldon) is one of the most frightening stories I’ve ever read. You can read it in its entirety here. Masters of Horror adapted the story in 2006 – you can watch the episode on Hulu.
Carol Clover’s book, Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film introduced the concept of the “Final Girl,” the last woman who survives the killer’s movie onslaught. The book was based on her shorter essay, “Her Body, Himself” about gender identification in slasher films, which can be read here.
HBO Asia is airing its second original production, four-part horror mini-series Grace. Filmed locally and with an entirely Asian cast, the series revolves around a father’s infidelity and the ruin it brings to his family. The first episode is available on YouTube and HBOAsia.com.
February is Women in Horror month, organized by the site of the same name to promote women’s contributions in the field. 2015 Women in Horror is a couple of months off, but if you wanted to participate, here’s how.
